Ist Annual International Conference on Sustainable EduTourism-Havana, Cuba
Document

1st Annual International
Conference on Sustainable EduTourism
Explore the connection between Educational Activities and Sustainable Tourism

November 8 & 9, 2010

Melia Cohiba Hotel, Havana, Cuba

What does raveling to Las Vegas for a conference, to Italy to learn culinary skills, and to Havana for university study all have in common?  They are all examples of innovative ways of combining learning with traveling to a unique location.  Generally speaking, that is the definition of EduTourism: travel for the purpose of formal or informal learning in a unique local environment. The result:  a socially and economically sustainable tourism product that benefits both the region and its visitors.

The economic and demographic shift of the traveler is changing rapidly.  It is more critical than ever to develop new and sustainable combined education and tourism opportunities that better address and respond to these changes.  With this in mind, we are bringing together leading experts in both the Education and Tourism/Hospitality fields to provide insight, stimulate discussion, and facilitate capacity-building workshops on how to identify and move forward with EduTourism initiatives.

The purpose of this conference will be to explore the vast possibilities and benefits that exist in the collaboration between the Education and Tourism/Hospitality sectors.  Both industries (and the geographic location and traveler) stand to benefit from working collaboratively to identify creative ways of promoting a region’s tourism products in combination with the region’s educational offerings.  Through this thoughtful and harmonized integration, a range of distinct EduTourism products can be designed and implemented.

Conference Highlights:

 * Various high level networking opportunities to establish potential partnerships such as breakfasts, receptions, excursions, business matchmaking services and interactive workshops.
*  Opening keynote address by K. Michael Haywood- President of the Haywood Group and an international industry expert specializing in  the development of training programs on “enlightened hospitality” and the development of strategic approaches to developing sustainable tourism. http://www.sustainabletourismlab.com/kmichael.pdf
